The Value of Humor
The value of humor is something of which most of us are aware. I suspect a majority of us have experienced the pleasure of a good belly laugh at some point in our lives! Jokes are often used in both public speaking and personal relationships to set people at ease. Being able to find the humor in circumstances you face day in and day out can add much joy to your lives. Did you also realize that humor can actually be a healing force? Maybe you saw the movie Patch Adams or read Norman Cousins’ classic, Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient? Adams, a medical doctor, believes that laughter, joy, and creativity are an integral part of the healing process. He’s had much success with his approach at the Gesundheit Institute. Cousins, a layman, had a serious disease of the connective tissue that led to him having a lot of pain and trouble sleeping. He found that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter would give him at least two pain free hours (Cousins, p.39) Isn’t it amazing to think that moments of fun and laughter, can bring actual physical relief and healing?!
“At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.” ~Jean Houston
“Mirth is God’s medicine. Everybody ought to bathe in it.” ~Henry Ward Beecher
“What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.” ~Yiddish Proverb
The value of humor extends beyond what it may do for our physical health. Think back to your last good laugh, or even a smile that snuck up on you when something struck you as being funny. In such moments, life is good, isn’t it? Whatever is happening in our lives or in the world takes a back seat for that moment, and we are happy. The value of humor, then, lies in how it enriches our lives. Investigate the value of humor for yourself! Read a book on the matter. Take time each day to lose yourself in something funny, whatever that might be for you. And remember to look for the lighter side of the happenings of your day!
